“Sound Images brought our vision to life and went above and beyond to action our additional requests along the way.”

Queensland University of Technology’s Disability Student Services promotes an inclusive educational environment for students with disabilities.

In this series of case study videos, we talk with the students supported by QUT’s Disability Services to raise awareness about the support services available.

We created:

1. Why did QUT need these videos?

The target audience for the videos was QUT staff, students, and prospective students with disabilities, injuries, or health conditions.

The primary goal was to communicate the role of Disability Advisers within Student Services – and how they create a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere for disability students seeking assistance.

2. What were the most important points to include?

  • Students with a disability have the right to access and participate in education on the same basis as other students.
  • Collaboration is key. It’s everyone’s responsibility to ensure education is equitable.
  • Disability Advisers within Student Services play a key part in ensuring education is equitable.
  • How to access services and support.

3. What did we film?

We filmed on-camera interviews with three students and an academic staff member who have all experienced the collaborative approach to implementing adjustments.

By hearing from students who are currently supported by QUT, other students would understand they have a place to talk about their own circumstances. And an equitable opportunity to succeed in their studies.

We also filmed background footage – often called ‘B-roll’ – to colour in the interviews and show typical campus life for each interviewee.

“The videos have well and truly surpassed my expectations!

Amazing job, the boss agrees. “

Julie McKenzie | Manager, Disability Services, QUT

4. Where did we film?

  • All around Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove QUT campuses
  • QUT Disability Advisers’ offices
  • Student Services reception
  • Assistive technology labs
  • Lecture theatres

5. How are the videos being used?

“A special mention to Kath and her wizardry in the editing suite.

How on earth has Kath had time to do other projects with all my demands?!”
